Water pressure sensors

Our pressure transmitters for liquid media are used for measuring differential pressures or for level measurement in water pipes, storage tanks or heating systems. These sensors are used in hydraulics, pneumatics and process technology as well as in mechanical and plant engineering and building automation.

What types of pressure sensors do we have?

  • Pressure transducer / pressure sensor for gaseous media: These pressure sensors are used to measure relative, absolute and differential pressures. They are typically used in ventilation or air-conditioning ducts. The values can be read out directly at the sensor or, integrated into the building automation system, passed on to a control system.
  • Transducer / pressure sensor for atmospheric air pressure: The measurement of these values is particularly important for weather observation and weather forecasting.
  • Pressure regulator / switch for volume flow: These sensors ensure that the desired flow rate is maintained in the duct. If the volume flow exceeds or falls below a defined limit value, the sensor triggers an action. For example, the sensor causes a valve to open or signals a pressure fault.
  • Pressure transducer / pressure sensor for liquid media: These sensors are used to measure differential pressures or fill levels in water pipes, storage tanks or heating systems.
 

How does a water pressure sensor work?

Our pressure sensors for measuring relative pressure are mounted directly on the pressure pipe. The pressure measuring cell of the sensor (made of ceramic or steel) is sunk into the pipe and comes directly into contact with the measured medium.
Water pressure sensors for measuring absolute pressure or differential pressure are usually fitted with copper tubes and mounted close to the pressure line. The copper tubes are inserted into the pressure line according to the requirements in order to measure the current pressure or the differential pressure in front of and behind an installed water filter. Internally, the sensor converts the measured values into bar.
If the sensor is integrated into the building automation system, the measured values can then trigger a corresponding action. For example, the pressure sensor transmits an error or alarm message to the control system, which can then be read out by the operator or can also actively trigger the corresponding regulation of the water pressure directly, for example.

 

Where are sensors for measuring water pressure used?

Pressure transmitters / pressure transducers for measuring water pressure are used in hydraulics, pneumatics and process technology. Pressure sensors are also used in mechanical and plant engineering as well as in building automation.
A distinction is made between the following types of pressure measurement:
  • Relative pressure: The relative pressure is the pressure difference compared to the respective atmospheric pressure.
  • Absolute pressure: The absolute pressure is the pressure difference compared to zero pressure in an empty room (vacuum).
  • Differential pressure: Differential pressure sensors measure the pressure difference at two different points in the pressure system. This measuring variant is used, for example, in filter monitoring and level measurement in closed containers.
 

What is the difference between bar, pascal and hectopascal?

Different units are used in pressure measurement.
Pressure sensors for measuring air pressure from S+S mainly output the measured pressures in "pascal", as these are usually low pressure values in closed systems. One pascal (Pa) is the pressure that a force of one newton exerts steadily on an area of one square meter (m²).
The unit "bar" is often used to measure large pressures. For example, atmospheric air pressure at sea level is around 1 bar (= 1,000 hPa). One bar is the pressure that a force of ten newtons exerts steadily on an area of one square centimeter.
This results in the following conversion:
1 bar = 100,000 Pa | 1 bar = 1,000 hPa
1 Pa = 0.000 01 bar | 1 hPa = 0.001 bar
