As the name suggests, an outdoor temperature sensor measures the temperature outside buildings, systems or vehicles.

Temperature sensors such as NTC or PT1000 are used, which precisely detect temperature changes and convert them into electrical signals. These signals enable a heating control system, for example, to react automatically to falling outside temperatures - efficiently and in an energy-saving manner.

Correct positioning is crucial: the sensor should not be exposed to direct sunlight or sources of interference such as exhaust air ducts.

Typical areas of application for HVAC

  • heating systems:
For weather-compensated flow temperature control according to the heating curve - e.g. in combination with boiler or heat pump controls.
  • Ventilation and air conditioning systems:
For temperature-dependent control of ventilation volume flows, damper positions or cooling capacities - especially in larger buildings or systems with BMS/GLT connection.
  • Building automation & MSR technology:
In smart building systems, outdoor sensors serve as input signals for numerous control strategies, such as demand-based air conditioning, shading or enabling heating/cooling circuits.
  • Refrigeration and technical centers:
For monitoring and control in outdoor areas of technical systems - e.g. for frost protection monitoring or for controlling recooling plants.
  • Industrial & functional buildings:
In areas exposed to the weather, e.g. halls, warehouses or machine houses, outdoor temperature sensors provide reliable values for energy-efficient operation.

Wherever temperature data forms the basis for intelligent control or safety systems, these sensors ensure reliable values.

What you should look out for when buying

The requirements for outdoor temperature sensors in HVAC technology are high - especially when they are integrated into building automation systems, central heating systems or ventilation systems.
To ensure that the sensor works reliably and provides permanently correct values, you should pay attention to the following criteria:

  • Measurement characteristics & sensor type:
Different sensors are used depending on the system requirements - e.g. PT1000 or NTC 10k. Compatibility with the control technology used (e.g. WAGO, Siemens, SAIA etc.) is important.
  • Rule relevance & accuracy:
Precise detection is crucial in weather-controlled heating systems or for frost protection functions. Pay attention to small tolerances in the relevant temperature range (e.g. -20 °C to +40 °C).
  • Mounting type & sensor type:
Depending on the installation location, different designs are available - wall sensors, surface-mounted sensors, pipe-mounted sensors or combinations with weather protection hoods for exposed locations.
  • Housing quality & protection class:
At least IP54 is required for outdoor use - IP65 is better if direct weathering or an industrial environment is to be expected. The housing should be UV and temperature resistant.
  • Cable routing & ease of installation:
Make sure there is sufficient space in the connection compartment, well-labeled terminals and options for different cable types. Some models offer pre-assembled cable lengths or quick installation systems.

FAQ

Where should an outdoor temperature sensor be installed?

If possible, the sensor should be installed in a shady location protected from the weather - ideally on the north side of a building to avoid direct sunlight. This is because the sun, exhaust air pipes or other heat sources can falsify the measurement results.

If installation in such locations is not possible, special weather and sun protection housings are recommended to protect the sensor from environmental influences and ensure correct temperature detection.

What protection class should an outdoor temperature sensor have?

Sensors with at least IP54 protection are recommended for outdoor use. In particularly humid environments (e.g. in industry or on façades without roof overhang), IP65 or higher may also be appropriate.

Can an outdoor temperature sensor also be installed on pipes?

Yes, there are special pipe contact sensors that are used to measure the temperature of heating or cooling pipes. Good thermal coupling (e.g. using heat-conducting paste) and suitable insulation against environmental influences are important here.

What to do if the measured values fluctuate greatly?

Fluctuating values may be due to incorrect installation locations (solar radiation, draughts, exhaust air) or unprotected sensors. Correct positioning, a sun protection housing if necessary or checking cable connections and contact resistances can help here.

Are there differences between sensors for indoor and outdoor temperature?

Yes, outdoor temperature sensors are specially designed for weather resistance (UV-stable, suitable for damp rooms, larger temperature ranges). They often have a robust housing and are mechanically more resistant than indoor sensors.
